Disaster Management and Flood Mitigation in Sundarbans :
Project Location: Purba Atapur Village, Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, west bengal, PIN -743446
Objective:
To provide immediate relief and support to flood-affected communities in Sundarbans.
To promote disaster preparedness and mitigation measures among local communities.
To support long-term recovery and resilience through sustainable livelihood initiatives
Pre-Disaster Phase :
1. Conducted rapid survey of flood-prone areas in Sundarbans.
2. Established early warning systems through mobile messaging and community alerts :
3. Conducted awareness sessions on disaster preparedness and mitigation.
During Disaster Phase :
1. Provided dry food packets to affected families.
2. Established community kitchen, serving 1600 people for 9 days in Purba Atapur Village
3. Distributed polythene sheets for instant shelter construction.
Collaborated with community members to repair damaged roads/ River Wall.
Post-Disaster Phase
Conducted training sessions on disaster management and mitigation in local schools (Atapur Kenaram High School, Manipur M B C High School, etc.).
2. Organized awareness sessions on flood risk reduction and management.
3. Initiated mangrove plantation drive with community participation, providing earning opportunities through sapling production, plantation, and maintenance
Outcomes:
Provided immediate relief to 1600 people through community kitchen.
Supported instant shelter construction for affected families.
Enhanced community awareness and preparedness on disaster management.
Promoted sustainable livelihoods through mangrove plantation and maintenance.
