Mangrove CSR initiatives in Sundarbans

It is with immense gratitude and pride that we, the team at Sukher Swarga Foundation, share the news of a momentous collaboration that promises to bring significant benefits to our beloved Sundarbans. We have successfully partnered with 20Cube Logistics, a Singapore-based company, for a large-scale mangrove plantation drive.

Data and Project Details:

Total Mangrove Saplings Planted: 4.8 lakh (480,000) Contribution from 20Cube Logistics: 14,000 mangrove saplings.

Location: Manipur, Mithekhali, on the bank of the Raymangal River.

NGO: Sukher Swarga Foundation, Sundarbans Based Grassroots NGO.

How the Sundarbans Will Benefit:The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a region of immense ecological importance but also extreme vulnerability. The frequent and severe cyclones that batter our coasts have a devastating impact on the lives and livelihoods of the local people. This project, while providing immediate ecological benefits, also directly addresses these chronic challenges with the following data-backed impacts:

Protecting Lives and Homes: Each year, an estimated 1 lakh (100,000) people and their homes are at risk from the cyclonic storms that frequent the region. The breaking of river embankments during these events leads to catastrophic flooding, destroying houses and displacing families. Mangroves are a natural shield, and our plantation of 4.8 lakh saplings will significantly bolster this defense, protecting communities from the full force of future cyclones. Combating Salinity and Restoring Cultivation: When the river embankments break, a surge of saline water inundates agricultural fields. This salinization of the soil and freshwater ponds ruins cultivation for years, leading to widespread crop failure and food insecurity. By strengthening the riverbanks, our project will help prevent this saline intrusion, preserving the fertile land that is the backbone of the local economy. Empowering Women and Creating Livelihoods: This project has a direct and profound impact on local livelihoods. The cultivation of these saplings is supported by 29 women-led nurseries, a cornerstone of our community-based approach. These women not only gain a sustainable source of income but also become leaders in their communities, driving the restoration efforts and empowering other villagers. Boosting Fisheries and Local Economy: Mangrove forests are vital breeding grounds and nurseries for a wide variety of fish and aquatic life. The expansion of the mangrove cover will lead to an increase in the population of good quality fish, directly benefiting the fishermen whose livelihoods depend on a healthy river and estuary.
